What is Citizen Journalism?

Hopefully this won’t be me for much longer!

Citizen Journalism, what is it exactly? It’s a question ive been asking myself since Ted first brought it up. Google defines citizen journalism as the collection, dissemination, and analysis of news and information by the general public, especially by means of the Internet. So a Citizen Journalist is someone who’s main job is not to work for a company that gives people their news but who does it anyway because they have knowledge that needed to be shared. In the past few years due to the growing popularity of social medias like Reddit and Youtube, ease and access to information has been a day-to-day expectation for most people across the world. For me, an example of citizen journalism that assists in my life is the twitter feed UOW parking, it gives parking data for each parking lot in UOW and shows the amount of spots left. Not the hard-hitting journalism you imagine when you hear citizen journalism but it is people in the general public informing others.

  1. Hello! I thought this was a great post and I loved the meme! I think it would have been interesting for you to look at citizen journalism compared to the legacy media- will it pose a risk to traditional news reporting or will they be able to coexist peacefully? This article is also an interesting read ( http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2006/08/07/amateur-hour-4 ), and it certainly feels as though legacy media looks at citizen journalism through condescending eyes! I really enjoyed your post and your links to everyday (and local) examples worked well to enhance it 🙂
